The Nordic Street Food Revolution starts now! 
Every year millions of people in the Nordic countries visit football games, street festivals, rock concerts and food markets. The foods served at these premises are rarely exciting or innovative. However, street food is a growing business sector world-wide. In the UK, street food is one of the fastest growing food sector, and employs 10 000 people.

As part of the New Nordic Food program, we have launched a project, which focuses solely on Nordic street food. To kick off the work we have arranged a two-day conference in Malmö on the 5 and 6 February 2013.

As our key note speaker we have invited the UK’s leading expert on street food, Richard Johnson, journalist at the Guardian, food critic and BBC broadcaster. Richard Johnson is also the author of “Street Food Revolution”, in which he describes the rapidly growing street food scene in the UK. He also initiated the British Street Food awards with Marco Pierre White, and his company is now working as a consultant with big name retailers who want to learn from the energy and ideas that street food is bringing to the restaurant scene.

What is Street Food?
Street food is ready-to-eat foods or beverages, which includes many types of foods ranging from cereal and fruits to cooked meats and drinks. It is usually sold in busy public areas, such as: pavements roadways back alleys of markets school premises bus and railway stations beaches parks and other public spaces. It is served with the minimum amount of fuss in individual portions dished into take-away containers. These containers come in a variety of materials such as disposable plastic, paper and Styrofoam plates, bowls, cups and utensils.

Street food is...
Convenient - quickly available for people on the go. Cheap - important for poor consumers who may not be able to afford a nutritious meal somewhere else. Tasty, authentic and culturally enriching - as opposed to eating the same fast food from food chains with outlets around the world!

Street food can be democratic, easy and fun. The start-up costs for a budging food entrepreneur is a fraction of what she would spend to open a restaurant or a café. Street food can be innovative and inspiring. Today, British super market chains look for new ideas and concepts amongst the great variety of street food available in the country.
