Food capital of culture Umeå 2014
SWEDEN: Umeå is the capital of culture 2014 and most northerly city of culture to date. The city started the year of culture with a massive party, Burning Snow, to celebrate snow, the indigenous peoples the Sami, and the rich cultural life that the city is already known for. Thought has also been given to the food and meals in the capital of culture's large programme.
There will be focus on the Sami's food and traditions, where everything on the elk can be used from the meat to the tendons and the fur. In the new Sami Centre Trahppie in the town, guests can enjoy tasty food samples and also warm themselves with the speciality coffee with cheese.
Several of the city's restaurants will serve reindeer and elk, berries and chanterelles as the main ingredients in their menus. Many of them have also led the way with locally produced food, wine and beer, for example, the restaurant boat Sjöbris, Köksbaren and Restaurant Rex.
For many years the Restaurant Viktoria was the city's centre of gastronomic and true Swedish food, but it has just closed. The restaurant will soon be revived under the same of Gotthards Krog in the new building Väven by the Ume river.
In Väven, which will be the city's new culture centre, as well as a hotel and restaurants there will be a kitchen amongst the creative workshop rooms, which groups and families can borrow. In the past school kitchens were used for this sort of thing but these are not for open to amateurs today, and instead people who want to cook food together can use a kitchen and facilities in Väven, explains the architect Maria Olsson, White Architects, responsible for Väven. Later on in September, as part of the year of culture, there will be a Food Festival in Umeå with theme tents, competitions and markets with local food.
