Attracting young people to the cooking profession

27-02-2013

“We're catering for a party” is a recruiting project aimed at attracting more young people into the cooking profession. It all started in Sør-Trøndelag in the autumn of 2009 and, by all accounts, has been directly responsible for a 27% increase in first applications for the restaurant and food professions in the county two years later. The idea is that students in the restaurant and food professions visit secondary schools in their county. Together all the pupils will cook a party meal with the older students as the teachers. In this way those who have not yet decided on what education they want to take will get experience and learn something about food, cooking and meals. This will be a national project in a partnership between the Norwegian National Association of Chefs (NKL), the Norwegian Hospitality Association (NHO Reiseliv) and the training offices.
